Erik Sandgren’s imagery in prints and paintings has mostly to do with the Pacific Northwest: with special relationships here between people, first peoples and the landscape.
The Nirvana mural project required/inspired juxtapositions of the beloved NW landscape with more widely recognized cultural symbols. Sandgren thinks of it as the “Intersection of Wishkah and Broadway” – referring at once to its downtown Aberdeen street address and to the local river topography with an Native American name gone mainstream.
